Nonkian
乃ん喜庵
At the Machiya wagashi shop Nonkian, discover time-honored traditional confections, from thick, aromatic dorayaki filled with juicy red bean paste to fragrant brown sugar dorayaki and oversized skewered dango.
01 / ABOUT THE PLACE
Stepping past the storefront sign of Nonkian, the eye is drawn first to the substantial dorayaki. The classic version features thick, dense pancake layers with a satisfying bite and a pronounced grilled aroma. Between the lightly sweetened pancakes rests a generous portion of juicy, whole-grain tsubuan red bean paste, striking a balanced harmony between the natural flavor of the azuki beans and the toasted crust.
For a deeper sweetness, the brown sugar dorayaki is hard to pass up. A sweet brown-sugar aroma rises from the soft, moist pancake, paired with defined red bean grains to deliver a rich, cohesive treat that feels reassuringly hefty in hand. Visitor accounts also note seasonal or varied offerings like apricot and chestnut dorayaki, giving returning patrons plenty of reasons to explore different flavors.
Alongside the dorayaki, the skewered dango stand out for their striking size. The grilled yaki dango retain the rustic chew and elasticity of pounded rice, marked with fragrant char and coated in a hearty, sweet-savory mitarashi glaze. Fragrant kusa dango infused with Japanese mugwort are topped with smooth koshian paste, making either choice a rewarding afternoon sweet.
The broader mochi confections show similar care, including soft, stretchy daifuku wrapping sweet bean filling, and savory-salted sticky rice ohagi that sets off the sweet paste. Delicate offerings like Zuiko—a whole kumquat enrobed in white bean paste and baked—and crumbly, melt-in-the-mouth kimi shigure highlight the maker's subtle craftsmanship. Located along Otakebashi-dori in Machiya and open from 8:00 in the morning, the shop provides an accessible stop for everything from everyday treats to boxed gifts.
